Second week of vernon garden club and we have 6-8 graders working with the k-2 kids. Today at Vernon Garden we studied seeds. We learned about kale seeds, orach seeds, rattlesnake beans, buckwheat and garlic chives and colendula seeds. We made little seed packets for our buddies at Wriggler elementary. We played games about seed travel, and we learned the Garlic Song. We also planted garlic cloves in our garden. We learned that garlic is harvested in summer.
Hello my name is chase and this is what we did at gardening club. Today our whole class harvested 6 pounds of lettuce, orach, chives, and thyme. We harvested for our school cafe, our homes, and communities, after that we went inside and prepared home made ranch with some of our extra harvest ,and celebrated our last class with a feast of ranch that consisted of lemon jam, bread, and sweet pickles. Over the course of this class we went to different field trips like the sticker shop, Albina headstart, Fernhill Estates, and our other field trip to dar salam. That was one of best places I went to and we gave lettuce to different things to people and meeting new people as went on those field trips.
Today we harvested lettuce, and we went to Albina head start and the sticker shop on Alberta. Right now we are harvesting lettuce for lunch tomorrow. I think its really fun to be able to do this kind of stuff because some children don’t get to and it’s a great experience. The children at Albina were very happy we were there. The sticker shop is called No Limits Stickers and that is where we got our labels for the salad bags printed. When we walked in the shop we gave them the lettuce, we also took pictures while they ate the lettuce right on the street. The people who worked there were very happy we came. And i also think its very cool to know where the veggies came from , and that they are school grown.
Tadem’s Blog Post : Week 5 Field Trip to Fernhill Estates
Today we walked 32 blocks from Vernon to Fernhill Estates, a nursing home. We gave the residents lettuce, thyme, orach, garlic, chives, and we gave each person in the cafeteria a flower. The flowers we gave them were radish and kale flowers. They loved all the things we gave them. It was a very long walk. When I think about the experience of being at a nursing home it was kind of weird and I felt uncomfortable but I’m glad that the residents liked their flowers – Tadem, 6th grade
Lyndsey’s Blog Update : Harvesting for our Community Week 4
We had a incredible field trip to Dar Salam, an Iraqi restaurant on Alberta street! http://darsalamportland.com/
The students delivered herbs to the staff who said they’d like to use the fresh herbs for their salads. We had the opportunity to try freshly made flat bread, tabouli, and tahziki. Checkout some of the photos from our first community delivery, as well as the comments students wrote about the food we tasted at Dar Salam.
Thank you so much to Violetta from Dar Salam for hosting us!
Noelia’s Blog Post : Week 3 Harvesting for our Community
This was the best day ever we harvested for our families and we even got to plant lettuce. We got to pick collard greens it was so fun. We also had a game were we had to trust each other somebody would stand in the middle of all of us we would stand in a circle and they would trust us and they would lean back and they would get pushed by us. So that was what we did .
We are making pictures we are planning to make our own stickers to label our salad greens that we donate. We are also making posters for the cafeteria
Noah’s blog post : Harvesting for our Community Week #2
Hello my name is Noah and I attend Gardening club at Vernon school. Today we had a leaf scavenger hunt, we were looking for orach, miners lettuce (which has cool back story), plain old lettuce, garlic chives, parsley, and thyme. We played a game were you had to blindfold yourself and taste plants and guess their names. Then we harvested plants for our salad. We washed and cleaned them too. I went into this class without very high expectations, but today really changed my mindset. I intend on coming back again for more interaction with my community and garden. And now I tell how miners lettuce saved Oregon’s life. During the 1800’s Pioneers had a tough winter food was low and so was there vitamin C. That lead to an outbreak of scurvy. while some weak miners were well mining they came across some weird looking plant they decided to try it, it was amazingly good. And get this its high in vitamin C. And all thanks to good ol’ miners lettuce, so make sure to pig out next time you have miner lettuce salad.
