Vernon Garden Spring 2014

Harvesting for our Community Project

Hello my name is chase and this is what we did at gardening club. Today our whole class harvested 6 pounds of lettuce, orach, chives, and thyme. We harvested for our school cafe, our homes, and communities, after that we went inside and prepared home made ranch with  some of our extra harvest ,and celebrated our last class with a feast of ranch that consisted of lemon jam, bread, and sweet pickles.  Over the course of this class we went to different field trips like the sticker shop,  Albina headstart, Fernhill Estates, and our other field trip to dar salam. That was one of best  places I went to and we gave lettuce to different things to people and meeting new people as went on those field trips.

Today we harvested lettuce, and we went to Albina head start and the sticker shop on Alberta. Right now we are harvesting lettuce for lunch tomorrow. I think its really fun to be able to do this kind of stuff because some children don’t get to and it’s a great experience. The children at Albina were very happy we were there. The sticker shop is called No Limits Stickers and that is where we got our labels for the salad bags printed. When we walked in the shop we gave them the lettuce, we also took pictures while they ate the lettuce right on the street. The people who worked there were  very happy we came. And i also think its very cool to know where the veggies came from , and that they are school grown.

Tadem’s Blog Post : Week 5 Field Trip to Fernhill Estates

Today we walked 32 blocks from Vernon to Fernhill Estates,  a nursing home. We gave the residents lettuce, thyme, orach, garlic, chives, and we gave each person in the cafeteria a flower. The flowers we gave them were radish and kale flowers. They loved all the things we gave them. It was a very long walk. When I think about the experience of being at a nursing home it was kind of weird and I felt uncomfortable but I’m glad that the residents liked their flowers – Tadem, 6th grade
